I'm back! With the Creators still busy working away on the New Poptropica, I've been having a dearth of sensational new islands to post about, and that's why I've been taking somewhat of a break. With the holidays coming up, the Creators will be taking a break, and most likely can't keep their promise of delivering New Poptropica before the New Year. We'll all be waiting excitedly for when it arrives! But there's been quite a bit of news in the Poptropica world meanwhile, and I'm here to report it to you, loyal readers. The Creators have started a series of nominating one or two islands each month to be "Islands of the Month," often according to a theme of the current time of year. Whenever an island is nominated, the Credits reward for completing it goes up, and -- if it was a Members-only island -- it becomes available to all for that month, as well as limited time items coming back to the Store for Members only. With each IOTM, we also get some sneak peeks of sketches and ideas from the time of that island's development, which have been pretty interesting so far. Some are character sketches, but the ones that I love are those that show what the Island's designers were thinking when they created what they did (click to zoom): The first one (from Poptropolis Games) shows that even though Poptropica uses multiple designers, they all have a common style guide to follow -- which explains the remarkable level of consistency in the visual quality of Poptropica islands over the years. Also, judging from the signature on one of the notes, it looks like Jeff Kinney himself still has a creative hand in the game that he founded! The second picture (from Shrink Ray) reveals how the Creators design game mechanics, another very important factor in the success of an island. The mechanic shown here didn't actually make it into Shrink Ray, and I can understand why -- from the notes, it seems they might have found it to be too tedious or difficult. I would agree with that, but I imagine it might have been fun to swing around the level whilst clutching for dear life onto a treacherous improvised hot air balloon, followed by the satisfaction of just barely sticking the landing onto a platform high-up somewhere... ah, the possibilities. This month's select are Wimpy Wonderland and PoptropiCon; playing the island or any of the episodes will net you 500 Credits each -- for a total of 2000! Now you may think that's an absurd amount of credits, especially if you have been playing the game for a while, and you'd be right. This has been going on for most of this year, as the Creators gave credits away in the Daily Spin Wheel, raised the medallion reward to 300 credits per island, started awarding credits for replaying islands, and held frequent special events, like IOTM. Why are the Creators suddenly causing massive inflation in the Credits economy? The answer is simple: because bigger numbers are more fun. This doubtless makes the game a lot more engaging, as players (especially new ones) enjoy the rush of getting a large payout of credits and then dashing it all in the Store. It's actually not a bad idea; before this, buying cool items and costumes from the Store was not even worth it for non-Members. Saving up for a single item, let's say one that cost 350 Credits, would require you to complete five islands. Not only is this disproportionately difficult compared to the unlimited borrowing enjoyed by Members, you would run out of islands! Perhaps the new way is how it should be. Congratulations to Massive Sun for winning the last Poptropica Hide & Seek competition! (This one lingered around for a rather long time because of my inactivity, but it turned out that it was somewhat difficult anyway, so it all turned out fine. Remember, the first entry that is correct and detailed enough is the winner, even if others also got it right!) She correctly guess the image below. As always, there's another challenge up already, so head on over to the Hide & Seek page and take a shot at answering it! Hard to believe, but this guessing competition has been running for over five years now! It used to be called "Guess Where I Am," and here's the original post that started it all. Sadly, I haven't kept very good archives, so I don't know for sure how many snapshots we've gone through, but based on my guess that I post a new one every two months on average, I would guess that there's been at least 30. Now I can't promise anything, but I might have dug up enough material for one last post before the year's end. Keep your fingers crossed...

I'm pretty sick right now, so my friend Larkwing will be filling in for me and working on the guide for the last episode. UPDATE: The island guide and video walkthrough are both complete! Click here to see them. You can also watch the video guide below: And also, the Creators released something else fun today that non-Members can also play with; Bingo for PoptropiCon! Each tile has one character, and as you play each episode, you can mark which characters you saw. Interestingly, now we finally know the names of these characters! Here's the link for you to print out and play.
Before we get to Underground Adventure, remember that PoptropiCon: Spoiler Alert (the second and climatic episode) is released to all players! You can use my guide, or the newly-created video walkthrough. Trust me, it's a very fun episode! The winner of the PoptropiCon costume contest will earn a one-of-a-kind prize. See if you can put together the ultimate villain outfit, but beware — the action at this convention is about to get real! Since July 2013, the Daily Pop (click here for all the images) has hinted that there might be an underground island coming soon, something to do with exploring a mine hidden among caves and geysers. It might also involve finding some sort of colony or hive. Exciting! I interpreted it as the return of Legendary Swords. They tapered off in September that year, but some new information tells me I was wrong. The Creators tweeted this: And then implied that it's going to take place underground. On the current schedule, we can expect it in 2 months, after PoptropiCon's final episode. What do you think? This sounds like an epic island idea!
The second episode of PoptropiCon has come out for Members today! I finished it fairly late, but still got #82, and enjoyed it quite a bit! The full written guide is finished! Click here to see it. Also, the video guide is now done. In the meantime, everyone can now play the cool first episode of Arabian Nights, and the guide for that is here. One strange thing about PoptropiCon is that the Creators didn't release a video walkthrough for the episode immediately. I think that was a pretty wise move. Members, don't forget to get the Popzilla Costume! Before you go, for those of you not active on Twitter (hint: you should follow me), here are some very early sketches that the Creators recently posted: The first one is obviously from the upcoming Arabian Nights 3 -- looks like they're going in a cool direction! The second one is really interesting. Why is that guy playing basketball in space? And why is the illustration not flat 2D like Poptropica and perspective like the Poptropica comics? I think this might be a sneak peek from the upcoming comic book (in February) rather than a really bizarre island idea, but you never know. And the third one is a little bit too random for me. They all have something wrong with/coming out of their mouths though. Some strange genie ideas, perhaps? We'll find out eventually. Have fun, and make sure to enter the Land Challenge!
The first four days of the Poptropica Land preview are over, and that means the winners of the Dream Home contest have been announced! They're not really called "winners" officially, though. Perhaps it's because they've got so many good entries? Sadly, mine was not one of them this time, I was too busy, but I'll try to participate in the others. So, without further ado... Make sure to click on each one to see it in all its full glory! They're all great, but my favorites were Cool Sponge's Victorian mansion, Slanted Fish's slanted fish, Golden Lobster's whale, Mad Comet's hillside home, and Zany Crown's treehouse. I voted for one of those; which one did you vote for? The Creators' Blog home page is where the poll is, or you can click here. Immediately after that, the contest for the best Village has already started. Only four days, so get building! Here's a useful tip: hit the 's' key in your Land to save a screenshot of the entire thing, which you can crop later. Cool, isn't it? Check out our Land page for more tips! And for some even more exciting news: the second episode of PoptropiCon is coming out for Members this Thursday! Check out my sneak peeks of the episode until then. To celebrate the release, there's a new costume, the Popzilla Costume, available for Members. Get it fast, it's only here during Early Access of the episode, which starts tomorrow! There's even more fun for non-Members: everyone will be able to play the first episode of Arabian Nights on the same day! Click here for the guide. Be sure to get this costume and vote for your favorite Land creation! But that's not all for today. Check out the latest video from Captain Crawfish. In it, he tells you how to enter the Land Design Contests, in case you didn't know. Very useful: I wonder if the Creators will ever release the World file for Dr. Hare's awesome Secret Lab creation? I guess technically we do have the original Dr. Hare's Secret Lab, but still... Okay, that's it for today!
Have anyone of you ever played Magic? It's the first trading cards game, and there's going to be a trading cards game in PoptropiCon! The card game is centered on the Mighty Action Force comic book franchise, which seems to be the theme of the whole episode. Here are the cards you can use: Nice art, don't you think? There are two players. Each player has a deck and a hand (you draw a card from the deck into your hand every turn). Each card has a value of gems; you can either gain that amount of gems for yourself or remove that amount of gems from the opposing player. There's probably a target amount of gems you have to reach in order to win, or perhaps the opponent loses when they hit 0 gems. So far, I don't know the reason why you play the games. Anyway, moving on to the scenes that you'll visit during the island! It's also going to release with it's own common room (that's where the Atrium door leads from the Theater scene). The Creators are getting adventurous with the number and complexity of scenes once again! Also, did you hear? The Creators are re-releasing Shrink Ray Island! Anyway, back on track. The episode is in a very early stage right now, so the most I can gather is this: you're trying to create a costume this time to look like Omegon, one of the Might Action Force heros. In order to do this, you'll have to beat people at the trading cards game so they'll let you get certain items, or things like that. Fairly Poptropica-y, don't you think? To top it all off, here's the link to the intro animation. I hope these sneak peeks were insightful, and have a nice week!
Arabian Nights Island, the winner of the Create Your Own Dream Island contest, is so close to being released at last! The official release date is October 2, which is a Thursday, as usual. The trailer is pretty interesting, though it made no sense to me (view it below). And remember, click here for Poptrickia's sneak peeks for the episode!
Getting the Balloon: Let me say one thing: it's VERY rare (UPDATE: it was so hard that the Creators had to tweak the frequency -- props to the super-lucky who found it during the first 8 days!) Here's my strategy that's worked in the past:
What's your most favorite Poptropica moment? Mine is the time I beat Astro-Knights, and the most memorable was the Jersey Devil's house on Cryptids Island. Your favorite Island? I loved them all, but Survival stands out (if only because it's so recent). Answer in the comments! What do you do on a birthday party? Eat cake and ice cream, other irrelevant stuff... kids, now is the time to get your parents to let you have ice cream on a weekday! New: Behind the Scenes of PoptropicaSome crazy news here! After four years of being on my own island in the sea of Poptropica blogging, I've joined another blog -- Behind the Scenes of Poptropica! BTSPop is focused on cool sneak peeks of the variety you've been seeing on Poptrickia, only a lot more elaborate. It's owned by my friends Nameless UnDEFiNed and Slippery Raptor. Check it out! In other news, PoptropiCon has finally released to non-Members! Very strange of the Creators to delay it by a week, breaking their normal rhythm. Here's the full guide if you're stuck!
The ultimate, final episode of Survival Island is out for Members today! I got #260, not bad considering I was three hours late, but I really think this episode was weak (difficulty-wise). More on that later! Strangely, PoptropiCon is still not out for non-Members. This usually means that there are some bugs and things that still need to be fixed, but I didn't experience very many of those. Anyway, as for Survival 5, the full written/illustrated guide is complete; click here to read. The video guide is complete as well; click to watch! UPDATES: The full written guide and video guide are complete. Click the links to see each one. PoptropiCon has just released to Members today, and it's a pretty unique island in a few ways. First of all, the Creators have released an official video walkthrough of it, for free, at the immediate second that the island released. Which they are advertising on the homepage and in tons of other places. Doesn't that somewhat kill friendly competition on their own player maps? Hmm, this is making things tricky for us fansites, isn't it? (Check out Poptrickia's PCon guide too) Anyway... PoptropiCon itself is a pretty awesome island (which I'm proud to say, I beat without the official video guide). The full written walkthrough is complete; click here to read. In it, you actually have to costumize specific items from different people in order to advance in the island, as well as do a lot of negotiating. The goal is to get into the sold-out PoptropiCon by any means necessary! I got #283, but hey, I was in school at the time it released *grumble*. Monsters are back in Poptropica Land! If you'll remember, the last iteration of Lands had little "pets" that would be automatically generated and bounce around the land. These monsters are similar, but much more elaborate and Poptropican-looking. And some of them do bite! Even more things are yet to come, though. So far, there's no sign of the knight, table and dresser shown in the picture to the right. Could we soon be getting more building materials? You can use them in the Poptropica Land contest if you choose to enter (come on guys, I know you've got cool stuff to share for prizes!) In other news, the final episode of Mission Atlantis also released for non-Members today, and the penultimate episode of Survival has been out for a while. Check out our walkthroughs!
