Survival Island Review

9/18/2014

Survival Island, Poptropica's first episodal island, has been wildly popular so far; there's 61 comments on the guide, compared to 8 (!) for Mission Atlantis. And why not? It's got plenty to love about it, including one of the best villains Poptropica has ever came up with. Here's my review of the entire Island, all five episodes. Though I have a reputation of being negative, I tried to be fair and there's actually a mix of ups and downs here. Also a lot of words, fair warning :)

Episode 1 - Crash Landing

Picture
Let's just say, not the most positive start. I was really irritated by the endlessly looping dry wind sound and the fact that you couldn't stay in one place -- let alone switch to another tab -- without resetting that scene. That's not to say that it was glitchy, just some poor choices from the Creators. The music, on the other hand, was awesome as usual. All five of the episodes had great music.

Also, the episode had a reasonable difficulty. You had to really think in order to get each item required for the fire, even though there was only one real goal in the episode: make a fire. Not to mention the super creepy and exciting binocular zoom-out at the end! That was the highlight of the episode. I give it three out of five stars.

Episode 2 - Hook, Line, and Sinker

Picture
Ouch. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and call this episode a waste of time and a weaker copy of Episode 1. Sorry. First of all, the premise was pretty much the same as Ep. 1: you're lost, survive by doing one specific, obvious thing, in this case catching a fish, in the last episode making a fire. But Episode 2 was much easier and way too obvious: you go to the left, pick up a convenient fishing pole, find all the items you need, then return to the place where there's obviously a lot of fish (no need to look for them), and press SPACEBAR. The beaver dam mini-game was pretty easy, but besides, why are you destroying their natural habitat and punching innocent animals on the head? Sheesh.

Also, it was a little bit less polished too. Maybe these bugs have been fixed now, but fish flying out of the water and through the air? The boulder strikes ice but doesn't crack it? On the other had though, the music was even awesomer than the last episode. You can't go wrong with Poptropica music. All in all this episode gets a two out of five stars. If only for obnoxiously getting in the way of the more exciting episodes.

Episode 3 - Distress Signal

Picture
Talk about a turn-around! This episode would have to be one of my favorites. The mystery around the wreck area was pretty chilling: why is there a huge, broken plane lying here among the trees? Whose items are these that have dropped all over the area? What is Max McGullicutty trying to say on the cargo manifest? And the important one -- "Who is MVB?" This is the episode where the real fun starts to begin. To top it all off, the background music goes really well with the mood of the episode.

The highlight of the episode is the animation. I loved the plane as it crumbled and fell through the trees, and especially the part where you try to leap out of the plane hanging over a ravine. My other favorite: the radio tower scene. Climbing the radio tower was not too stressful and really fun, to see your Poptropican shrinking smaller and smaller as you rise above the trees and into Van Buren's realm. Little things here and there about the animation really appealed to me. It was all very entertaining.

Some downsides: there were initially a lot of bugs (its launch was even postponed a day to fix them but some slipped past), the part where you jump off the see-sawing plane wing seemed a little too impossible to be intentional at first, and it wasn't as difficult as I would have liked. Still, it gets five out of five.

Episode 4 - Cabin Fever

Picture
Cabin Fever was definitely the climax of Survival Island. And it was a good one, at that! The thing that made this episode work really well was the atmosphere -- it starts off welcoming but tense: you're finally rescued, but you're getting lots of unpleasant hints about MVB, until, BAM, you're poisoned and locked in a room. From then on, you go through the curious experience of skulking around an insane game hunter's personal cabin, with a myriad of stuffed and mounted animals everywhere (such as Winston), and persons willing to stuff and mount you (such as MVB, the chef and Winston). And of course, the music was brilliant once again, especially at the last grand reveal. I loved it. A full five out of five stars.

Episode 5 - Escape

Picture
This episode carried over almost the same atmosphere, music style, and scene appearance from the amazing Episode 4. Which was a pretty bad choice. Don't get me wrong, I loved the atmosphere, but I didn't like how they re-used it. And there was another problem: the climax was supposed to be episode 4. Why, then, are we still sneaking around Van Buren & company?

Still, it wasn't a total flop. I liked how we're finally on the offensive, that even though we're oppressed by a pretty overpowering enemy with traps and hounds reaching across the landscape, we're still sneaking under his nose and launching a "secret revolution" of sorts. I also appreciated how Max McGullicutty was integrated into the story, but I thought he could have done more than magically show up riding a bear.

Oh, and how could I fail to mention my most favorite part of all? The opening Chase scene was, in my opinion, one of the most powerful scenes in Poptropica, suspenseful and how you're thrown right into it before you catch a breath. Even though it was frustrating when you jumped instead of ducked, the music was pretty darn awesome (and the upgraded "Tally-ho" call was quite a relief). This episode mostly gets 3 out of 5 stars, but including the chase scene I'd have to up it to four out of five stars.

Wrapping it up

Tallying up the scores, Survival Island gets a pretty impressive 4/5 score. What can I say, it was one of the most refreshingly fun islands I've played in a while! Click here for the guide, before the last episode becomes public and the Survival craze dies down!

Bonus!

I found the two MP3 files for the Tally-ho call! One for the voice recording, the other more realistic one.

Survival 5: Escape is out!

The ultimate, final episode of Survival Island is out for Members today! I got #260, not bad considering I was three hours late, but I really think this episode was weak (difficulty-wise). More on that later! Strangely, PoptropiCon is still not out for non-Members. This usually means that there are some bugs and things that still need to be fixed, but I didn't experience very many of those. Anyway, as for Survival 5, the full written/illustrated guide is complete; click here to read. The video guide is complete as well; click to watch!

Mission Atlantis episode 3 ("Out of the Blue") just released for Members, and Survival Island 4 ("Cabin Fever") is also here for non-Members and the Poptropica app. Atlantis 3 is the last episode of one of the most intriguing and exciting islands yet! I wonder if Poptropi-con will be this short? UPDATE: Mission Atlantis guide and video complete!

Picture
Poptropica Land alpha 2 is also here, and it's... just... amazing. Can't put it into words. You can literally build or destroy anything in the world --- and it's a MASSIVE world -- and it SAVES! Excuse me, give me a couple hours or so to play it. By the way, I got #15 on the Player Map for Atlantis 3! That's my closest yet!

Picture
So, Survival Island episode 5 is in development now. It starts off with a chase scene, where you try to escape from Van Buren, and this guy helps you. His name is Merc (or it may be Max McGullicutty, from the Survival 3 plane manifest -- it would explain why he's wearing a tie), and he's your true rescuer in Survival. The one who isn't trying to hunt you. He's the one who wrote the message "Meet me in the woods" and "You are not alone" on the tapestry in your room from Survival episode, and signed it "M.M."

He's might be a very superstitious fisherman. Here's a conversation with him (where Neptune is, of course, Hades -- creepy) that you will have with him in Survival episode 5:

Airplane Manifest
UPDATE: Changes in the files suggest that this is actually dummy dialog that coincidentally seems to fit with Survival 3. Equally likeley is the fact that Merc/Max is actually from the plane and is in a similar situation to you. (Click the image to zoom).

Remember the Dr. Hare's Lair project on Lego CUUSOO that the Creators were hyping up for a while? Though it got the required 10,000 supporters, it was sadly turned down in favor of a Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary set.

Recently, TheFastComet on Lego Ideas has been on a roll, and has designed a Legendary Swords-themed set, complete with the boss robot at the end. He's even got an official shout-out from the Poptropica Creators, and may be working on a replica of the red rocket. Continuing in the spirit of awesome villains, he also has a Binary Bard's Citadel set collecting supporters; one word: YES. I've supported both projects and I hope you will too! Here's a link to more Poptropica Lego projects. With a sample this large, at least one has to become a reality, don't you think?

That's all for today. I've confirmed the existence of the rumored Poptropi-con Island... but that's for my next post. Until then, I'll just be hearing "Tally-ho" in a British accent repeating in my head over and over... you'd have to play the episode to understand.

Survival EP4 Sneak Peeks & More Islands

PictureMyron van Buren
The Rhinoceros Costume is in the Store now for Members (and the glitch that let non-Members costumize it has been fixed now, sorry!) Anyway, what I'm concerned about is what a rhinoceros is doing in Survival Island.

We know that our "rescuer" from Survival Island 3 is Myron van Buren, the man who caused the plane crash in the wilderness and who we were warned about. Now he's holding us prisoner, presumably in this cabin. He's an avid hunter, as this image of his foyer shows. (Noticeably, he hasn't shot a rhinoceros yet. Are the Creators trying to get us killed?!)

Survival Island episode 4 has not been released yet (that will probably happen on July 10th or 17th), but most of it has been uploaded to Poptropica's servers already. Here's sneak peek at the upcoming episode. It took longer than I'd expected to decode all the files for the episode, but this was worth it! Warning, spoilers ahead! Survival Island EP3 is here!

Survival episode 3 is playable for Members and Survival episode 2 is open for all starting today. I got #221... shame on me, I know, but I was at school when it released. The video guide is here, and the written guide is complete.

Click here for the full Survival Island walkthrough!

Guess what? My wish came true, the lagging bug has stopped! You know the problem where if you clicked outside Poptropica's screen rectangle it would get super jumpy and slow? No more of that. Hurray!

Now only two more left: making feet tilt on tilted platforms and bringing the classic Poptropican "pushing against a wall" animation back instead of the weird body shuffling.

Some Deadline-Bending, And an Announcement

Just letting you know that Survival Island episode 3 is going to release on Friday instead of today. The Creators just announced this, with promises that they're going to "nip and tuck" a few things prior to that. Aargh, I could have saved my sleep yesterday! If anyone knows the exact time that new islands arrive, please write that and your timezone in the comments. It'll really help me get walkthroughs in faster.

Anyway, I have an announcement to make: From now on, Poptrickia will provide video walkthroughs for EVERY new island. Now that the islands come in short episodes instead of jumbo hour-long ordeals (which I enjoyed, for the record), making a video guide is easier, and in my opinion, more fun for you to follow. Don't worry, I'll still be writing written walkthroughs as I have for the past 3 years; those are still Poptrickia's focus. Old islands may or may not get new video guides (Mocktropica and Mythology will, though).

Survival is barely started yet and already Members can play Mission Atlantis EP1! It's a deep-sea photographic expedition gone wrong. (Which is probably a good thing, otherwise you'd have no island to play!) In other news, Survival Island Episode 1 is also available for all players -- see the guide.

Mission Atlantis

4/4/2014

Boy, was I off about my prediction about the next island... but I'm happy to be wrong, because the reality is more exciting. The next Poptropica Island will be Mission Atlantis! It'll be released in episodes like Survival. The trailer is enticing but plain; but it's got some interesting parts.
Notice those purple glowing marks near the end? Some of them look like bones. But then there's a part that has some dots arranged in a grid, which looks artificial. Whatever it is, I'm hooked :)

It would be nice if the woman in the vessel would show some emotion about being cut down and dropped into the depths of the ocean--just my two cents. Also, (start nerdiness) jellyfish can't really shock things electrically. Actually they just shoot stinging cells (called nematocysts) into flesh which are covered with poison, making you feel like you've been electrocuted. (end nerdiness).

Are you Surviving Survival Island?

Wow, that wind noise really gets on your nerves. And the thermometer is just lethal; look away for a few seconds, or switch tabs to write your walkthrough, and you're dead when you look back. My solution: click on the menu before leaving the game unattended. Also, though Survival so far has almost no story (except the creepy binoculars scene) and has a ton of little unfinished plot hooks sticking out (wet kindling that you never use, owls hiding in EVERY SINGLE TREE, part of your ax stuck in a trunk, a sleeping bear), I think it (and all episodal islands) is going to be very long. There are like 5 or 6 episodes planned now. Even though they're spread out, I think this will give us more room for a real story to happen; that's why Survival starts slow. What do you think?
