Island Hopper, Pelican Rock, and the Classic Homepage

Hello Poptropicans! There's some exciting things going on right now in Poptropica. First up: the Island Hopper Sweepstakes! They've already been here for 2 weeks (sorry guys, late post again :/), but the contest is going to go on until the end of the year, December 31. If you enter any common room during the contest, you can find a yellow Island Hopper ticket. Each ticket that you have increases your chances of being drawn in raffle to win prizes!
Details are available on this official page. Here's a list of the prizes though:
Picture
  • In addition to the grand drawing at the end of the month, 5 players are drawn every week on Thursday! If you're in these weekly top 5, then you'll win a 1-month Poptropica membership, just in time for Pelican Rock Island (more on that below). So far, only 2 out of 4 have taken place, so there's plenty of time!
  • At  the end, the winner gets a 30-minute call with Jeff Kinney (sweet!)
  • The 10 2nd-place winners get a free 6-month membership (so that should cover early access to 2-3 islands)
  • And the 20 runners-up get a Poptropica Toy Blimp (which comes with the Blimp Adventure game) as well as a 1-month membership.

In other news, the Main Street preview for Pelican Rock Island is open to all Poptropicans. If you go to it from the map, you can explore the (still unfinished) Main Street of the upcoming island, and there are a number of free things you can get by walking left and talking to the characters, namely these two:
Picture
Picture
That dog's gotta be the funniest and most creative Follower ever in Poptropica :). And last but not least, if you go all the way right on the preview, you can check out the Photo Booth. This is just like the Photo Booth on the Home Island, but with prison-themed items and backgrounds. All this elaborate pre-Island hype, plus the Creators' promise that Pelican Rock is like no other island, is definitely getting me intrigued!
Picture
Yes, the fish is as large as the police dog.

Quick interesting aside: many people aren't impressed with Poptropica's new homepage (well, it's almost a year old now, but it's new in relation to the 8 years of the game's history). Yes, it looks great aesthetically, but there's a lot more distracting clutter, links, and ads that you have to load and see before clicking on the Play Now button, which some older players don't like. But there's a way to get the old homepage back!
Picture
The following link takes you to a clutter-free "Poptropica Login" page almost like the classic main page. After you log in, things continue the way you're used to. It's at http://www.poptropica.com/play-poptropica.php I don't know how long it'll be here, but might as well bookmark it while it lasts!

But wait, there's more! (I've got to start making shorter posts more often rather than these mega-posts every month; sorry about that). We've got a winner for the Poptropica Hide & Seek contest! Congratulations to Comical Melon, who correctly guessed the following image:
Picture
Picture
If you haven't won the Hide & Seek yet, what are you waiting for? There's a new image and a new challenge up already, go check it out and give it a try! And if you're up for something more like this, check out the Stolen Snapshots game on my friend Slippery Raptor's blog; the format's similar, the games are harder :)

Picture
Ever wish there were even more ways to connect with the Poptropica community than Twitter? Well, now there is: HPuterpop and the Poptropica Help Blog team have recently released the new Poptropica subreddit! Older Poptropica players can post and comment on all things Poptropica over on r/poptropicahelp, so come join and help the forum grow!
Anyway, that's all for today! Enjoy the month of holidays, and I hope I'll get an opportunity to post more often; at least once before my traditional New Years' post. :)

Escape from Pelican Rock Island

11/11/2015

First of all, sorry for the extended lack of new blog posts here on Poptrickia. The truth is that I was sick for a while, which put me behind in school, so I had to spend a lot of time catching up, and then the midterms rolled around so I was occupied studying. I always try to post regularly though, so please excuse the lateness!
The newest upcoming Poptropica island has been announced: Escape from Pelican Rock! For months we've been drooling over Daily Pop sneak peeks of scenes that appear to take place in a kind of prison, and now we've got this exciting plot:
Pelican Rock is the toughest prison ever built. And after you're framed for a crime you didn't commit, it's your new home! Use your wits to devise an escape plan, and your nerve to pull it off. But getting out is just the beginning — because the real criminal is still out there!
Escaping from prison or some such captivity has been a recurring thing to do in Poptropica for a while (most recently Arabian Nights), but it's been laughably easy. Now that there's a whole island based around that, it should be more challenging and fun! And guessing from the description again, there's going to be something to do even after your escape: find out who the real culprit is! The island itself will be releasing sometime in December according to the Creators' word on Twitter, but it's not fixed yet and may vary (probably towards the end).
Picture
(off-topic note: does anyone else think the music to the trailer seems a little off for the theme it's trying to convey? Perhaps it's just because I first heard that music on Mystery of the Map and I've got the tropical image stuck in my head, but eh). If you're hungering for some imagery from the island, check out the recent sneak peeks, starting from around August.
In addition, the Creators are giving away some cool free stuff in anticipation of the island's release. They've already put the Escapee Dr. Hare costume in the Store for Members (don't worry, we're unlikely to actually see Dr. Hare as a character on the island), and this Thursday all players will be able to get some more items. We don't know exactly what they will be, but the Creators have given this screenshot as a hint, so it may be something to do with the police dog shown in the picture:
Picture
Picture
Time willing, I may be able to get some even more top-secret sneak peeks directly from the Island's files later this week or next; not promising anything though! Moving away from that topic, also on Thursday, the Creators have announced that a World Champions map for Reality TV Island will be created! Not only that, first-time completions will give 200 credits rather than the usual 150. That should inspire some heavy competition :). Also, it's very important to note, that to get on the Champions map, you will most likely have to restart the island, not just play the game show again. Again, that's not confirmed yet, but it's likely.
Alright, that's all I've got for today! Enjoy the upcoming excitement of Escape from Pelican Rock, and I definitely hope to find time away from schoolwork to post more often!

Kindle Fire App-dates & Halloween Concept Art

10/18/2015

The Poptropica app recently came out for Kindle Fire tablets, and now they've got a couple of awesome new updates to try out before the rest of us, meaning Android and iOS users, get to play with them. (The speculation for this is that Amazon reviews apps in a much more relaxed manner than Google and Apple, so they get new updates sooner). They are...
  • The Fall Fashion costume pack in the Store. In case you missed the buzz, it includes the incredibly covered costume pictured right (that now also goes for 75 credits in the desktop Store).
  • And the most important... importing your Poptropican's appearance from the desktop to the app!
Picture
Picture
For a long time, players have asked for the ability to log in to their online accounts from the app, thus having access to the same costumes, items, and Membership from the desktop. Granted, the Membership model doesn't work so well in the mobile app world as the in-app purchase model, so importing your costume is the next best thing! All you have to do on the app is make a new account and then enter your username and password from the online Poptropica (don't worry, it's safe to enter that info into the official Poptropica app). Soon, Android and iOS players will be able to do the same!

On a different note, it's October again! The month of Halloween, in case all your neighbors' gruesomely decorated houses didn't clue you in. The Creators have also gotten in on  the spirit, with a bunch of new Halloween characters, props, and backdrops for a limited time only in the new Photo Booth. But there's hints of something more... as the latest Creators' Blog post says,
It might not be a bad idea to start practicing your Halloween photos in the Photo Booth. But perhaps we've said too much... for now.
So perhaps there is some sort of Halloween-themed Photo Booth competition coming up later this month!
Also this month, the Creators have been sharing previously unpublished concept art for some of Poptropica's creepier islands, like Monster Carnival, Ghost Story, Vampire's Curse, Great Pumpkin, and the Haunted House, on Twitter:
Insightful and detailed, aren't they? Bonus question: can you guess which island each of these sketches refers to? (Click on each image to zoom in and see info). Finally, Andrew Wiles asked an interesting question on Twitter the other day for the Creators, about the monsters from Mission Atlantis:
Well, I had never thought to connect those creatures to actual prehistoric animals until now :). Anyway, that's all for today's post. Happy October!

TFI Week, the new logo, and Poptropica Cartoons!

10/10/2015

Timmy Failure Island just released earlier this week for all Poptropicans! To celebrate, the Creators continued their recent streak of generosity in Store credits. A whopping four (!) promo codes were offered throughout this week:
  • TIMMYTODAY1: 75 credits (expired)
  • HUNGRYTOTAL2: 75 credits (expired)
  • ROLLORATTLE3: 100 credits (expired)
  • FINDTHEPANTS4: 150 credits (valid all this weekend)
  • Not to mention the 150 credits for completing the island! It used to be that only 50 credits were given (and 100 way before that) for first-time island completions.
  • And of course, first-time completions of Early Poptropica are still valid for 200 credits until the end of the weekend! Don't miss the last chance to celebrate Poptropica's birthday this year.
Picture
Has anyone else noticed the many ways that the Creators have started giving away free credits? This increases the freedom for non-Member Poptropicans quite a bit; they can now buy a lot more from the Store. At the same time, recent changes to Membership (the 7 islands made Members-only and rise in some Store prices) have been aimed at increasing the value of paying for Poptropica and getting more paying customers. So it seems that the Creators are making up for the shocking withdrawal of those 7 islands from public status, by getting the best of both worlds and making both Members and non-Members happy. Well, it worked, didn't it?
Anyway, enjoy Timmy Failure Island, and if you need any help, Poptrickia's guide is always handy!

Noticed anything new on Poptrickia recently? Hint: scroll up. It's Poptrickia's brand-new logo!
Picture
What do you think? This is, somewhat surprisingly, the first time Poptrickia has ever had a logo. (I know, it's been ridiculously overdue). All credit goes to the Poptropica Help Blog author and graphic designer HPuterpop; he came up with the idea and designed the logo for me! I'd love to hear feedback in the comments.

And now for some very interesting news... Poptropica may be starting a new line of YouTube cartoons! Two new videos were released recently (well, not that recently, but I'm sorry I've been so busy lately):
Watch them. They're genuinely funny. The first, "Shark Toon," is about Shark Boy (who they're now calling Shark Guy). Glad to see the character surprisingly revived after his disappearance! At the end, it promises a new installment of the series every week, but that hasn't happened yet. Perhaps due to lack of enthusiasm on both Creator's and our (the viewers') sides? Anyway, the second one features another well-known, albeit newer, Poptropica character: Gamer Guy, in a "Draw my Life"-style video. Responses to that have been quite positive, with many fans submitting their own Draw My Life videos related to Poptropica. What do you think  about the cartoons? The art style is very fun in my opinion, and we need more of them, hopefully regularly.

And last but not least, the winner of the incredibly difficult Poptropica Hide & Seek challenge has been declared! Congrats to Paultropica6 for getting the correct answer. The reason why this one was so difficult (and thus dragged on for more than a month) is a little thing called parallax.
Picture
If you want to know the right answer, and have a shot at the newest game, head on over to the Games page.
Picture
Well OK, one last hint: note the point of view that you see outside of a window in Poptropica (or in real life) as you walk past it. Notice how it shifts?
Well, that's all for this mega-long post :). I've said this many times before, but I've been very busy with school and other responsibilities recently. I don't want to make excuses, but that's the reality, and if I had enough time I would make  a higher amount of reasonable-length posts more frequently rather than a couple huge ones per month. Oh well; enjoy Timmy Failure Island and Poptrickia's new logo (again, thanks a ton HPuterpop!) until next time!

Poptropica's Photo Booth!

9/26/2015

There's another exciting new feature on the new Home Island -- a Photo Booth! If you land on the island and go right, there's a little camera-shaped kiosk there that you can click on. This is a new feature that lets you create a picture of a Poptropica scene involving a variety of backgrounds, Poptropicans, and props. It's a drag and drop editor that's super easy and fun to use, and when you're done you can download your image!
Picture
Picture
Rest assured, I will soon create a detailed page on Poptrickia explaining every aspect of the Photo Booth, but here is the main overview of its features:
  • Choose from 5 backgrounds
  • At least 100 props to put in
    • Props and characters can be moved, rotated, flipped,  resized, faded, and layered
  • Many characters (including your own Poptropican, but not other users... yet), with different
    • facial expressions,
    • poses,
    • handheld items
  • 5 pre-made templates (involving the Creators in humorous situations)
  • Crop and download your picture when you're done (but sadly you can't load one back in to edit it again).
With these simple tools you can actually make a lot of unique stuff in that Photo Booth, and a whole hour or so can go by on it without noticing that time fly! Make sure to share your creations when they're done.
A quick note on this topic: Many things that were (or would have been) available as cards from the store, like the Costumizer, the Photo Booth, the Bundle Shop, and the tutorial, are now being represented by things on the Home Island instead. I think that's a more appealing way of presenting them as just items in a menu or Store list, isn't it? I think we'll soon see even more things, like the Friends list and the Daily Pop, turn into parts of the Home Island.
Anyway, that's all for this post. Now I'm off to play my new favorite mobile game (well, besides Poptropica), Monument Valley. I promise I'll try to post more often!

Picture
Just barely on the coat-tails of Poptropica's 8th birthday (the party is still raging on), Timmy Failure Island has released for Members on Poptropica! TFI is a sponsored island, featuring the characters, art style, and universe of the well-known kid detective from Stephen Pastis's novels. The official description is...
When danger lurks, and criminals hide around every corner, you need the best detective money can buy. That detective is not Timmy Failure — but don't try to tell him that. You're about to come face to face with the craziest cast of characters ever to appear on a Poptropica Island. Trying to solve this mystery is only the beginning!

The full written and illustrated guide is available on the island page (click here) . You can also check out the official video guide for tips:
Enjoy Timmy Failure Island, and non-Members, keep celebrating Poptropica's 8th birthday!

Pigs! Cake! Poptropica's 8th Birthday!!!

9/15/2015

Picture
Yes, it's that wonderful time of the year again -- Poptropica's birthday! This September we're celebr8ing 8, that's right, eight years of amazing Poptropica history. That's an incredibly long time for any game to last, let alone such a lively game as Poptropica! But Poptropica has been doing much more than simply surviving to this age. No, it's been thriving -- more players join Poptropica every year, new comics, toys, books,  apps, and possibly even TV shows are coming out, brilliant new islands are being created. We've come quite a long way since Poptropica opened up with one lone island, Early Poptropica, back in 2007.
Picture
It doesn't stop here, though. Who knows what the next 8 years will bring?
Quick note... One interesting effect that's becoming harder to ignore: the original Poptropica players. Most kids who found the game back in 2007 were around the ages of 6-10 years old. Now those same kids (myself included) are in their mid to late teens. Even though new players are constantly joining, Poptropica might be slowly identifying itself with an older generation. Certainly today's Poptropica bloggers have established a monopoly, and they're almost all teenagers (I'm looking at you, Poptropica Help Blog, Thinknoodles, and even Poptrickia). We've already started seeing islands with more complexity and deeper themes, and my prediction is that it will only go ahead from there. Sounds exciting! Either way, the age selector for making a new character is going to need an update...
Picture
Well, enough history! What's in store for the party this month? Two words -- pigs and cake. It starts out in the traditional way -- common rooms all over Poptropica are filled chock-full with multicolored balloons. But only one of them -- the one with the big 8 on it -- is the one you're looking for. If you find and click on this semi-rare balloon,  you get the prize of the year, which is...
Picture
Picture
The 8-Bit Birthday Pixel Pig Power! (mmm... double alliterations). Not only does equipping this turn your character into a pixel8ed, bouncing pig, but if you press SPACEBAR, you throw birthday cake which turns other characters into pigs! And the best part -- it works on people in common rooms, too. Time for some extreme games of multiplayer tag!
And on the topic of Early Poptropica... starting today and continuing until the end of the party (about 2 weeks), there's a race to finish Early Poptropica! Players who have completed this classic island since today are being recorded and immortalized on the World Champions map for the Island. And if it's your first time, you'll get a whole 200 credits from it to spend in the Store. So don't just sit there, play Early Poptropica! And if you need any tips (or just to brush up), check out Poptrickia's guide of the island. (The guide itself is historical; it was written sometime in 2010!)
Picture
Well, that's the wrap-up of the party going on this month. Think about this: How and when did you discover Poptropica? Tell me in  the comments! Personally, I found it sometime in 2010 when a Poptropica fever had infected the whole 5th grade. Spy Island was the first one I tried, but I never got to finish it then because the teacher swiftly banned all computer use 😥. Ah, the memories...
Happy birthday, and long live Poptropica!

Hub Island & Poptanium Stashes

8/20/2015

Picture
There's a new island that just sprung up out of the blue this week: a Home Island, just like the one on the mobile app! Previously, new players had to figure out Poptropica just by trial and error (which I still think is a great way to learn something), but now the new Home/Hub Island also offers a guided tutorial. And it goes beyond the simple medallion-shard-finding quest from the mobile app: you can talk to almost any character for guidance, such as how to use the Costumizer.

Here's the fun part: now available on the online Poptropica through Home island is the Colorizer, now for free (just go into the New You shop). Previously, if you wanted to recolor your hair or skin color, you had to splurge in the store to buy the Colorizer, or visit certain places in the game that did it.

Picture
The Bundle Shop and the Arcade are also there, but they redirect you to the Poptropica Store and the Pathfinders common room, respectively. Hopefully there are plans to expand these with a new store and app-style common rooms (with the new chat and games).

And a quick word on the topic of Poptanium stashes -- in Poptropica Realms, it's possible to share worlds that you've created with the public. Poptanium is the currency that is needed to build anything in your realm, and there's a tool that lets you place Poptanium bricks into your realm, which can be collected later. So you can "give" Poptanium to other players by putting Poptanium bricks down and then sharing it! Brave Seagull has done just that, with an enormous world that not only looks good, but is filled to the coffers with pyramids of Poptanium that you can collect. The code is 9thzx., and according to Slippery Raptor's estimates, you can collect up to  4,630 Poptanium from it!

Pop-In Prize and App Multiplayer Updates

8/4/2015

Hello, and sorry for the late post -- I've been a bit busy on vacation, but I should be back on track for this week. First and most exciting of all, there's a new thing going on this month on Poptropica: the Pop-In Prize. This is an item that you get by entering a promo code, usually credits, and the code/prize changes daily, so you get rewarded for logging in every day. Now, this system isn't unique by any means, but it's still interesting to see on Poptropica, and who knows, it might actually increase its pop-ularity (I'm so sorry).
Picture
If you want to see a list of all the codes and prizes, check out this continually updated post on the Poptropica Help Blog.
Picture
And now, there's some exciting news about the new Poptropica app update. The multiplayer game Balloons is now available in common rooms on the app! In case you're not familiar with it, it's sort of like a vertically inverted Connect 4 which you play with other Poptropicans. (Note the clever reference to Counterfeit Island's Balloon Boy on the start screen.) And that's not all...
Chatting has also come to the app, and it's a little bit more sophisticated than the desktop version. The important difference is that when you try to chat with someone, you first choose between Greetings, Compliments, and Questions. Then, as before, you choose from three randomized options for each category. Next, the other person can reply. The responses are also tailored to the place you are right now, for example, the Arcade in the home world. Personally, I find this a refreshing and long-awaited change to the basic chatting in Poptropica.
Picture
Last but not least, before I go, Poptropica has put up a help page for issues with the Flash Player. Maybe this means that it's a common enough issue that it needs a FAQ page. Anyway, if you're having trouble with Poptropica, it might be worth your time to go check it out before asking for help.
Picture
And... (OK, this is actually the last thing) any luck with the latest Poptropica Hide & Seek game, anyone? It's been at least a month and still no correct entries. I might have to cancel it early if no-one's got the answer, so keep trying hard!

Timmy Failure Island, and Money Problems for Poptropica?

7/9/2015

The good news: Timmy Failure Island has been confirmed as the next new island!
Coming to Poptropica (R) September 2015... Timmy Failure Island in full color! Only on Poptropica.
This is going to be another sponsored island, featuring the Timmy Failure comic book series, which features a boy who runs a detective agency (and presumably, is a failure at it). Although I haven't read it, it sounds like a fun premise for an island! Check out the official sneak peeks for more behind-the-scenes information.
Not to sound negative, but have you noticed the number of original Poptropica islands has gone down lately? Timmy Failure, Galactic Hot Dogs, and Mystery of the Map (the most recent full islands) have been based on other comic books, and Arabian Nights is based on the Create Your Own Dream Island contest winner. Poptropica's original ideas have been the most popular; take Survival Island from last year as an example. So they must be doing more sponsored islands for one reason: money. This coincides with Poptropica's break from its major sponsor, Pearson, while they are in the middle of major expansion into comics, mobile apps, TV shows, and other languages. Already we've noticed the slowdown in island releases. Perhaps that's going to be the permanent situation until Poptropica gets more funding and more employees to handle the extra load (I remember the Creators saying that they have less than 50 employees). But it gets worse...
The Creators just announced that the following 7 islands are now for paying Poptropica Members only. Forever. Keep in mind, these islands used to be open to everyone; some are classics that have been open for years.
  • Nabooti Island
  • Wimpy Wonderland
  • Big Nate Island
  • Red Dragon Island
  • Great Pumpkin Island
  • Wimpy Boardwalk
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Picture
Notice how they are all sponsored islands? In the new Poptropica, Membership and sponsored islands are becoming increasingly prevalent. Anyway, sorry for the negative news, and enjoy Arabian Nights 3!
