What with Shrink Ray Island's recent remake, I decided to create a video walkthrough for it, which I had wanted to do for the past 3 years but never got an excuse. Enjoy, and don't forget to also check out the written guide!

Poptropica on Android and Shrink Ray Remade!

After months of waiting, the Poptropica App is here as a free download for Android! Get it on your phone (or if you have one, tablet). It's almost the exact same as the iPad version, and they don't force a particular aspect ratio, which is awesome -- Poptropica in HD! If you need help on any of the islands, check out the Walkthroughs page, which has written guides for every island, and video guides for most too.

And speaking of bigger screen sizes...

Shrink Ray Island, Poptropica's 20th island first released in 2011, has been remade for the big screen and sound! Everyone, not just Members, get to enjoy it. The remake is largely the same as the original, aside from some zoomed-up scenes and minor adjustments.

Underground Adventure Island?

Before we get to Underground Adventure, remember that PoptropiCon: Spoiler Alert (the second and climatic episode) is released to all players! You can use my guide, or the newly-created video walkthrough. Trust me, it's a very fun episode!

The winner of the PoptropiCon costume contest will earn a one-of-a-kind prize. See if you can put together the ultimate villain outfit, but beware — the action at this convention is about to get real!

Since July 2013, the Daily Pop (click here for all the images) has hinted that there might be an underground island coming soon, something to do with exploring a mine hidden among caves and geysers. It might also involve finding some sort of colony or hive. Exciting! I interpreted it as the return of Legendary Swords. They tapered off in September that year, but some new information tells me I was wrong. The Creators tweeted this:

And then implied that it's going to take place underground. On the current schedule, we can expect it in 2 months, after PoptropiCon's final episode. What do you think? This sounds like an epic island idea!

Poptropica Land: The Best of the Best

Maybe you didn't get a chance to vote yesterday, but today you can vote to decide which is the best Land creation out of the four contest winners:

Go to the poll on the Creators' Blog to vote. Personally, I'm springing for Fast Lizard's haunted land (who currently has a crushing 60% lead). All the others are awesome, and I would have loved to explore Silver Lightning's obstacle course with my Poptropican instead of just looking at a picture. Make sure to vote!

Poptropica's Prehistory

Today Jeff Kinney shared with us some very insightful early ideas for Poptropica on the Creator's Blog (click here for that post). And it was quite a bit different from what Poptropica is today. First of all, that color:

(Click to zoom). Jeff said, "We envisioned an enormous map of single-scene rooms, and missions that you could go on every day." Presumably the rooms on the huge map above were not linked by bigger rooms, you had to manually pass through sections of the grid. Also, I find it cool how the Common Room was one of Poptropica's original concepts. It seems that rather than a story, each room was not very closely linked to others in the same area. And indeed, Jeff says "This was before we had the idea of islands or even the name Poptropica." I feel like in this old version, the game would have really gotten in the way of the story. I mean, just look at all those buttons and categories (Missions, Magazines, etc.) I'm glad with the direction they ended up taking. And... *chuckle*... that MP3 player, huh? No smartphones back in 2006.

The name

Poptropica was originally supposed to be called "Poptropolis" (no relation to Poptropolis Games). However, because of an undisclosed naming clash with a competitor, they changed the suffix to -tropica. Hence more island-y, less city-y in the modern game we now know and love. Ah, destiny.

Shrink Ray Remake, Tweets, and End of Land Preview

First of all, happy Halloween! If you celebrated it, hope you had fun dressing up (both physically and on Poptropica). And now, on to some exciting news: Shrink Ray Island is being remade with a bigger screen and sound!

Isn't it ironic how an island about being shrunk to half the height of a remote control is being given a bigger screen? I think Shrink Ray will benefit a lot from this upgrade. The old screen size just wasn't doing it for this island. Click here for the new Info page, and also the new trailer. The remake is promised to come out sometime this month.

Members can get two new costumes from the store: the Milk Box and the Bottle Cap. And also, Members are the only people who can now play Poptropica Land: the public preview has ended! Congratulations to all the nominees, which you can browse here, and also the winners in each category so far: Silver Lightning, Serious Bird, Zany Crown, and one more coming soon for Haunted; so far it looks like Fast Lizard is in the lead. Click here to vote! Thankfully, it sounds like come January, Land is going to be released to everyone -- and it'll be the final version, not an alpha or preview. Cool!

Remember that poll I made on how many people actually liked the new episodal islands? Only about one third of the people said that they liked the episodal islands. Sounds like the Creators listened -- because next year they're going to make NEW islands in full form!

Also, we've been waiting about half a year for the Poptropica App to release on Android devices. The Creators just said that we'll only have to wait 5 more weeks! Although, they have gone back on several promised release dates for the app (albeit due to technical troubles) and Android users will of course have to pay for the individual islands.

Who agrees that instead of charging already paying customers for each island (which are free online), they let us log in to our Member accounts on the app? I'm pretty mad that I have a Membership and still have to pay for mobile islands. Anyway, have a happy November!

PoptropiCon Ep. 2 & Arabian Nights Sneak Peeks

The second episode of PoptropiCon has come out for Members today! I finished it fairly late, but still got #82, and enjoyed it quite a bit! The full written guide is finished! Click here to see it. Also, the video guide is now done. In the meantime, everyone can now play the cool first episode of Arabian Nights, and the guide for that is here. One strange thing about PoptropiCon is that the Creators didn't release a video walkthrough for the episode immediately. I think that was a pretty wise move. Members, don't forget to get the Popzilla Costume!

Before you go, for those of you not active on Twitter (hint: you should follow me), here are some very early sketches that the Creators recently posted:

The first one is obviously from the upcoming Arabian Nights 3 -- looks like they're going in a cool direction! The second one is really interesting. Why is that guy playing basketball in space? And why is the illustration not flat 2D like Poptropica and perspective like the Poptropica comics? I think this might be a sneak peek from the upcoming comic book (in February) rather than a really bizarre island idea, but you never know. And the third one is a little bit too random for me. They all have something wrong with/coming out of their mouths though. Some strange genie ideas, perhaps? We'll find out eventually. Have fun, and make sure to enter the Land Challenge!

Dream Home Winners Announced!

The first four days of the Poptropica Land preview are over, and that means the winners of the Dream Home contest have been announced! They're not really called "winners" officially, though. Perhaps it's because they've got so many good entries? Sadly, mine was not one of them this time, I was too busy, but I'll try to participate in the others. So, without further ado...

Make sure to click on each one to see it in all its full glory! They're all great, but my favorites were Cool Sponge's Victorian mansion, Slanted Fish's slanted fish, Golden Lobster's whale, Mad Comet's hillside home, and Zany Crown's treehouse. I voted for one of those; which one did you vote for? The Creators' Blog home page is where the poll is, or you can click here.

Immediately after that, the contest for the best Village has already started. Only four days, so get building! Here's a useful tip: hit the 's' key in your Land to save a screenshot of the entire thing, which you can crop later. Cool, isn't it? Check out our Land page for more tips!

And for some even more exciting news: the second episode of PoptropiCon is coming out for Members this Thursday! Check out my sneak peeks of the episode until then. To celebrate the release, there's a new costume, the Popzilla Costume, available for Members. Get it fast, it's only here during Early Access of the episode, which starts tomorrow! There's even more fun for non-Members: everyone will be able to play the first episode of Arabian Nights on the same day! Click here for the guide.

Poptropica Land Public Preview and More Sneak Peeks

Starting today and continuing until October 30th, Poptropica Land is now open to all, non-Members as well as Members! During that time, the Creators will be hosting four contests; here are the topics:

Heh heh, looks like the Creators took my idea for the Obstacle Course competition... I'll be sure to enter that one. You've only got three days for each one, so best hurry up!

Very nice artwork. They promise that it's coming out in January 2015. Only two more months! And finally, just for fun, check out this rendering of a Zomberry cityscape that was never used. Looks so real I could almost swear I've seen that scene before.
